Trump to name Rubio as Secretary of State as Republicans win control of Congress

Donald Trump has confirmed he will nominate Florida senator Marco Rubio as his Secretary of State.

The decision comes as the Republican party wins control of the US congress, granting Trump’s party a triumvirate of power between the presidency, House of Representatives and the Senate.

“He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump said in a statement confirming the nomination.

Rubio was a finalist to be Trump’s running mate for the presidential campaign and is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran.
