Two bodies recovered at site of Baltimore bridge collapse

Two people recovered from the water at the site of the Baltimore bridge collapse have been identified.

Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, were recovered from a red pickup truck submerged in about 7.6 meters of water near the bridge’s middle span, Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Roland Butler said.

He added it was no longer safe for divers to continue operations in the area.

“We have exhausted all search efforts in the areas around this wreckage, and based on sonar scans, we firmly believe that the vehicles are encased in the superstructure and concrete,” he said.

Jesus Campos, who has worked on the bridge for Brawner Builders and knows members of the construction crew who died, said he was told they were on a break and some were sitting in their trucks to warm up when the bridge collapsed, the Associated Press reported.

The cargo ship which crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge underwent “routine engine maintenance” in the port beforehand, the US Coast Guard said.

US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said at a news conference that authorities had been informed that the ship was going to undergo the maintenance.

He added that they were not informed of any problems.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) boarded the ship, the Dali, and planned to recover information from its electronics and paperwork, NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said.
