Temperatures of up to 32°C could pose risk during Glastonbury weekend

A weather alert has been issued across large parts of England for this weekend, with temperatures of up to 32°C expected in places.

The south-east of England could expect highs of around 28°C on Thursday, rising to 29°C on Friday, with maximum temperatures in East Anglia and the South East potentially reaching 30°C on Saturday and 31°C or 32°C on Sunday before rain begins to move in in the west, the Met Office said.

The joint UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Met Office notice covers seven regions: London, the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, South East, South West and Yorkshire and the Humber.

It runs from 9am on Friday 23 June to 9am on Monday 26 June, drawing attention to the risks posed to people over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “This heat-health alert means that in the coming days we are likely to experience another sustained period of hot weather, so it’s important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

“Forecast temperatures this week could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions. If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.”

Thunder and showers seen in parts of the UK on Wednesday are expected to subside over the coming days.

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: “For Glastonbury, anyone there at the moment might well see a few showers for the rest of today but then we’re dry really until Sunday when we might just see some patchy rain as we go into the afternoon.

“But at the moment it shouldn’t really scupper things too much.

“Temperatures quite warm, peaking probably on Saturday around 26°C, so I think sun cream, sunhats, water are certainly going to be needed because I think it is going to be quite hot for them as they go through Friday and Saturday.”

He said Sunday’s weather will “probably be a little bit of relief” as clouds and outbreaks of rain begin to move in.
