Ukraine claims to have destroyed Russian warship in Black Sea

Ukraine claims it has destroyed a Russian warship in the Black Sea off the coast of western Crimea with US made missiles.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, known as GUR, small missile boat, the Ivanovets – sank after receiving “direct hits” to its hull” during a special operation in Crimea, which Russia has controlled since illegally annexing it in 2014.

Kyiv has released video footage, which has not been verified by i, showing the moment the missiles smashed into the ship, followed by a big explosion and the vessel sinking.

Russian military blogger “Voenkor Kotenok” wrote on Telegram the boat had sunk after being hit three times by naval drones.

According to GUR, the ship costing between $60m and $70m ( £47m and £54m), was on patrol on Lake Donuzlav in western Crimea, when it was hit.

Private security firm Ambrey said Ukraine used up to six sea drones in the attack, which each usually carry 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of explosives.

Russian authorities have not commented on the alleged attack.

Features visible on the vessel seen in the clip like mast and sensors match those on the Ivanovets.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian aircraft and ships in the Black Sea have helped push Moscow’s naval forces back, allowing Kyiv to increase crucial exports of grain and other goods through its southern ports.

In December, Ukraine, which has no warships, claimed to have damaged a large Russian landing ship Novocherkassk in Crimea, allegations which were confirmed by Russia.

In April 2022, the Moskva – Russia’s Black Sea Fleet flagship vessel – sunk after being bombarded by Russian missiles.
