WATCH: Victorian era squalor in Mbare’s council houses; Govt blames CCC-led local authority over streams of raw sewage

HARARE: THE government has said it will soon demolish the dilapidated houses in Mbare’s New-Lines area and construct new blocks of flats.

Housing minister Daniel Garwe last week told residents in one of Harare’s oldest suburbs that they would be moved to other areas such as Kuwadzana to pave way for the construction work.

He was speaking during a tour of the area as residents complained they had lived in these houses for decades without any title deeds.

Garwe, however, blamed the opposition led city council for challenges in the area and demanded to know why none of its representatives were present during his tour of the area.

“Water and sewer pipes are blocked,” said the minister.

“There are very few toilets for the population in this area. As a government, we want to promise you that we have been given a task to build better housing units- flats.

“These dilapidated houses will be demolished. Residents will be moved to new flats that are under construction.”

He continued; “Dr (Prosper) Chonzi (Harare City Health Director) we do not expect to see this mess. How do we prevent cholera outbreaks when we are watching raw sewage flowing like this?

“We have summoned your council officials and no one came. We will investigate why they snubbed us.”
