More than 40 killed in deadly Mediterranean fires as ‘extreme danger’ warning issued

More than 40 people have died, the majority in Algeria, as southern Europe and northern Africa continue to battle wildfires.

A total of 34 people have been confirmed dead in Algeria, as well as four people in Italy. Two pilots died in Greece on Tuesday after a water-dropping plane crashed on the island of Evia.

A third successive heatwave in Greece has pushed temperatures back above 40°C as authorities continue to issue evacuation orders for islands including Rhodes, Corfu and Evia.

In Italy, wildfires are raging across the island of Sicily, a small number of homes in Turkey have been issued evacuation orders and firefighters in southeastern France have also been tackling scattered blazes.
