Woman dies after being attacked by two dogs in Essex
A woman has died after being attacked by two dogs in Jaywick, a seaside village in Essex, police have said.
A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and is currently in custody.
Essex police said they were called to an incident at Hillman Avenue shortly after 4pm on Saturday 3 February where a woman was seriously injured.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The breed of the dogs has not yet been defined and police asked people not to speculate while waiting for expert confirmation.
Officers said the dogs have been âdestroyedâ and there is no risk to the wider public.
âWe have been carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances which led up to the incident and we believe she had been assaulted by two dogs,â Essex police said in a statement.
They continued: âSpecialist officers ensured the scene was safe and there is no risk to the wider public.
âUnfortunately, this did mean two dogs had to be destroyed.â
Chief Superintendent Glen Pavelin said the incident is a âhuge shock to the communityâ and experienced detectives are leading the investigation.
He said in a statement: âMy thoughts, and those of our officers and staff, are with the family of the woman who died yesterday.
âThis incident will be a huge shock to the community and I understand their concerns.
âWeâll have officers in the area throughout today so please come and speak to them if you have any information or are worried.
âExperienced detectives are leading the investigation to identify exactly what has happened.
âI know there will be speculation about the breed of the dogs involved. Weâre waiting for confirmation from experts about this before releasing further details and Iâd ask people not to speculate.
âIf anyone has any information about what has happened please contact us.â
