Zimbabwe evacuates citizens from Sudan as warring factions agree to 72-hour ceasefire

GOVERNMENT has evacuated over a hundred Zimbabweans from Sudan after warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire to allow foreigners to leave.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Nick Mangwana said the Zimbabwean nationals have been moved from the Port of Sudan to a third country and await their repatriation back home.

“Zimbabweans evacuated from Sudan are now on a sea vessel bound for a 3rd country, from where arrangements are being made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for them to be picked up by Air Zimbabwe,” wrote Mangwana on Twitter.

The Sudanese army and a paramilitary unit, Rapid Support Forces have been fighting since April 15 for control of the country.

A 72-hour temporary cease fire starting April 25 midnight has since been effected to allow foreigners in Sudan to leave.

The cease fire comes at the back of a 10-day non-stop heavy fighting in the capital, Khartoum.

At least 427 people have been killed in the conflict.
