Latest as minister says UK could leave ECHR to push through asylum policy

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has suggested that the UK could leave the European Convention on Human Rights in order to push through its asylum policy, saying: “We will do whatever is required, take whatever necessary action is needed.”

Meanwhile, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has slammed the Government’s “broken” asylum system, which she says is “costing the taxpayer billions of pounds”.

It comes amid the news that the UK and Turkey have agreed to a new partnership in a bid to target people smuggling gangs in the latest bid to crackdown on small boats crossing the Channel.
