Man charged with attempted murder over stabbing of woman in Aberfan

A 28-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after the stabbing of a 29-year-old woman in Aberfan, south Wales.

South Wales Police confirmed that Daniel Mihai Popescu, 28, from Merthyr, has been charged with attempted murder following the incident on Tuesday morning.

He is currently in police custody and will appear at Merthyr Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, South Wales Police said.

“The 29-year-old woman who was injured during the incident has been discharged from hospital,” the force added.

Chief Inspector Rob Miles earlier acknowledged “a real sense of shock within the local community with the attack having happened in broad daylight”.

He had stressed that there was no wider threat despite local schools locking down on Tuesday as a precaution, adding: “There will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance to local residents and the wider community.”
