Boy, 5, drowns in Newquay holiday park pool during family getaway at Atlantic Reach, Cornwall

A five-year-old boy has drowned in a swimming pool at a popular holiday park near Newquay, Cornwall.

The boy, who has been named in reports as Robin Caliskal, drowned shortly after arriving at Atlantic Reach Newquay on Monday.

His father, Cemal, 35, described his son as a “very cute and clever” child who “loved hugs”. He added that the family wanted “every parent to see this story” to stop it from happening again.

Devon and Cornwall Police said an investigation is underway after a child drowned in the swimming pool on Monday.

A statement said: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a child at a holiday park in Newquay.

“Police were informed by the ambulance service that a five-year-old boy had drowned in a swimming pool within Atlantic Reach Holiday Park, yesterday afternoon.”

Atlantic Reach Newquay issued a statement on social media saying the leisure park was temporarily closed on Monday evening.

An update was issued to say that “the Leisure Club will open as normal for gym & classes at 06:30 tomorrow (Tuesday 1st August) meanwhile the indoor pool will remain closed until at least 12 noon”.

The holiday park said in a statement its “thoughts are with the family at this time”.
