Doctor Who and Emmerdale star Richard Franklin dies aged 87 on Christmas Day
Doctor Who and Emmerdale star Richard Franklin has died at the age of 87 on Christmas Day, his family confirmed.
The actor â known for starring as Captain Mike Yates in Dr Who â died âin his sleepâ after fighting a long-term illness, his family said in a statement.
They continued: âWe are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling.
âHe is also well remembered outside the family for his long-running career in TV and theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages.
âThis gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.â
Franklin was best known for playing Captain Mike Yates in the BBC sci-fi drama Doctor Who between 1091 and 1974.
After he was replaced by Jon Pertwee he continued writing books based on the drama.
Franklin also appeared in The Doctors, Blakeâs 7 and Heartbeat, and he played Death Star Engineer Sirro Argonne in 2016 Star Wars film Rogue One.
His friend Liam Rudden â who had been given his first professional acting job by the stage and screen star â announced the news when he posted to the late TV starâs social media page on Monday.
He wrote on X, formerly Twitter: âIt is with great sadness, that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning.
âRichard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced.
âSleep well Richard. #RIP â Liam Rudden.â
In a post to his own social media account he said he was âdevastatedâ, adding: âFarewell to a mentor and friend.â
Katy Manning, who starred as the Doctorâs companion Jo Grant on the show about aliens and time travel, also paid tribute.
On X, she said: âOur wonderful brave captain Yates #RichardFranklin has gone on his awfully big adventure Iâm so very grateful I saw him on Friday.â
She added: âMy thoughts are with his family.â
Franklin, who was known for playing businessman Denis Rigg in British soap Emmerdale, also appeared in TV mini series Little Women, sci-fi series Blakeâs 7 and the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
He had graduated from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) in 1965 with an acting diploma.
