Infected blood scandal victims to learn details of compensation
Victims affected by the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS are set to receive details about how much they will receive in compensation after the Government vowed to pay âwhatever it costsâ.
Rishi Sunak issued a âwholehearted and unequivocalâ apology to the victims of the infected blood scandal, saying that the publication of the report into the disaster was âa day of shame for the British stateâ and promising to pay âcomprehensive compensationâ to those affected.
The Infected Blood Inquiry, which published its final report on Monday, identified a âcatalogue of systemic, collective and individual failuresâ that amounted to a âcalamityâ after more than 30,000 people were infected with deadly viruses as they received blood transfusions or blood products during NHS care between the 1970s and early 1990s.
Ministers are understood to have earmarked about ÂŁ10bn for a compensation package, with details expected to be revealed by Cabinet Office minister John Glen in Parliament on Tuesday.
