Wimbledon 2023 LIVE! Carlos Alcaraz vs Jeremy Chardy latest score and updates before Andy Murray, Cam Norrie
It’s day two at the All England Club and what should have been an action-packed one has been disrupted by rain. That won’t halt Andy Murray down, as he returns to Centre Court, and British no1 Cameron Norrie and top seed Carlos Alcaraz are also in action at SW19. Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek, favourites for the men’s and women’s titles, both made easy work of their first-round games, and now it’s over to the best of British, in Norrie, the best in the world, in Alcaraz, and one of the best ever, in Murray, to take to the grasscourt.
Alcaraz is in action against Jeremy Chardy on Court One, before Norrie wraps up the action against Tomas Machac. Murray takes on fellow British player Ryan Peniston in between on Centre. Elsewhere, 2022 finalist Ons Jabeur is also on Court One and Elena Rybakina begins the day on Centre against Shelby Rogers.
British interest was earlier in the day was halted by the weather. Katie Boulter was serving to stay in the first set again Daria Saville, while wildcard George Loffhagen lost an opening tie-break to Holger Rune. Follow all the action LIVE below with Matt Verri!
Live updates
Alcaraz saves break points
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *2-3 Chardy
Alcaraz nets his attempt at a drop shot – 15-30 and this might be as close as Chardy has come to a break!
And now he has a break point, poor backhand from Alcaraz. The first one Chardy has had all match. And it lasts about a second, he stands motionless as the ace out wide flies past him. Deuce.
Chardy will have another chance though, Alcaraz can’t make the pass. Can’t take this one either, despite a very optimistic challenge.
Deuce for a third time – Alcaraz being made to work for this game.
Rogers take the opener!
Rogers 6-4 Rybakina
The defending champion has problems.
Rogers has moved a set up after just over 40 minutes on Centre Court, she’s looked really good.
Rybakina has been suffering with illness in recent weeks – is that still hampering her?
Chardy hanging on
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 2-2* Chardy
Chardy is at least keeping this third set competition… for now. The Alcaraz forehand is punching through the Frenchman’s defence at will though.
It’s another rapid hold – Chardy hasn’t been able to put any pressure on the Alcaraz serve all match. Not a single break point.
Over on Centre Court
Rogers *4-3 Rybakina
The defending champion Rybakina has got her Wimbledon campaign underway on Centre Court, and she’s in some early trouble.
Rogers has the break in the first set and is just a couple of games away from taking it.
The rain is absolutely pouring down now at Wimbledon – don’t expect any play on the outside courts soon.
A Chardy hold!
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *0-1 Chardy
Chardy to serve first at the start of the third. More of the same though, as he sends a forehand tamely into the net. He’s about an inch from gifting Alcaraz another break point, but the smash just about clips the line.
The Spaniard unable to get the return back in play there, and Chardy does indeed have an early lead in the set.
Two sets up!
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 Chardy
First serve lands perfectly on the line, skids on and Chardy can do nothing about it. Sums things up. He thinks he’s done so again, but nobody knows what the call is. Both players seemingly want to challenge – it was out.
Some more brutal hitting from the Alcaraz forehand brings up three set points. One will do, lob flies long.
One set away from the second round, we’ve played 54 minutes.
Inevitable delayed…
Alcaraz 6-0 *5-2 Chardy
So, just over 45 minutes played and Chardy is serving to stay in the second set. Tough old afternoon.
The Frenchman has fixed the double fault issue and isn’t really serving terribly – the problem is what’s coming back from the other side of the net. Lovely slice from Alcaraz and it’s 30-30, the Spaniard two points away from the set.
Chardy holds, as he watches the ball sail beyond the baseline.
Normal service resumed
Alcaraz 6-0 *4-1 Chardy
A hold to love for Alcaraz means the pressure is swiftly back on the Chardy serve.
And pressure there is, as the Frenchman dumps two forehands halfway up the net. 15-30 and the warning lights have returned.
Two break points…. one will do. Stunning return from Alcaraz and he has the double break. Again.
Chardy up and running!
Alcaraz 6-0 *2-1 Chardy
Right. Here we go with Chardy’s latest attempt to hold serve. Court 1 willing him on.
A couple of loose returns from Alcaraz, 30-15. This already might be the Frenchman’s best game of the match. And now the big serve out wide, 40-15.
He’s on the board! Forehand dispatched. Big smiles from his box, and from Chardy too.
The dominance continues
Alcaraz 6-0 *1-0 Chardy
Here we go again. A break point for Alcaraz in the opening game of the second set, just getting on the board seems a challenge for Chardy. Forehand from Alcaraz flies long though, back to deuce.
There is the break though, at the third time of asking. This is brutal stuff.
