Donald Trump projected to win New Hampshire presidential primary

Donald Trump won New Hampshire’s Republican presidential primary election on Tuesday, US media outlets projected just hours after the polls closed.

The former president had 52.3% of the vote compared with 46.6% for former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, with 14% of the expected vote tallied, according to Edison Research.

While the final margin was still unclear, the results will likely increase calls from some Republicans for Haley to drop out of the race.

But speaking to supporters after the first projections came in, Haley said: “This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go.”

She also congratulated Donald Trump, saying “he earned it and I want to acknowledge that”.

Earlier on Tuesday, Haley told reporters: “I’m running against Donald Trump, and I’m not going to talk about an obituary”.

Trump responded: “Let her do whatever she wants,” saying voters will deliver the nomination to him anyway. His aides have argued for several days that Haley has no realistic path if she loses in New Hampshire.

Meanwhile President Joe Biden won a symbolic Democratic primary in the state even though he wasn’t on the ballot.

His supporters mounted a write-in campaign on his behalf to avoid a loss, even though the contest awards no delegates because it violates the national party rules he pushed for.
